For Belize mainland & the Cayes

Belize splits cleanly into two solar markets — the Cayes (San Pedro, Caye Caulker) where there's no grid at all, and the mainland where BEL charges $0.21/kWh but caps residential net metering at just 1.5 kW. We engineer for both, with shipping CIF Belize City and direct service to Ambergris Caye.

Belize Cayes off-grid configurator (Ambergris & Caulker)

Ambergris Caye (San Pedro), Caye Caulker, and most of the smaller Cayes have either no grid or unreliable diesel-genset systems. Off-grid solar is the only practical option. This calculator sizes a system for typical Cayes property types and ships CIF Belize City + barge to your dock.

The BEL 1.5kW residential cap problem (and three workarounds)

BEL's residential net metering program limits each home to 1.5 kW of solar — far less than the 5-10 kW most homes actually need. This is the #1 frustration of mainland Belizean homeowners. Here are the three legal ways to get around it.

How to install 5-15 kW residentially when BEL says 1.5 kW max

The 1.5 kW cap applies only to grid-export net metering. It does NOT cap how much solar you can install for self-consumption or off-grid use.

Workaround #1: Self-consumption + battery

Install 8-10 kW of solar with battery storage. Use your own power; only export 1.5 kW back. The other ~6.5 kW just feeds your home directly.

Workaround #2: Off-grid mode

Disconnect from BEL entirely. No cap, no application, no fees. Best for rural mainland properties with poor BEL service anyway.

Workaround #3: Commercial classification

If you have a home-based business or rental property, register as commercial. The commercial cap is 75 kW — far more flexible.

Mainland vs Cayes — two different solar games

Costs, regulations, and even system specs differ significantly between the Belize mainland and the offshore Cayes. Here's a side-by-side.

Mainland (Belize City, Belmopan, Cayo, Placencia)

  • BEL grid available Yes
  • Net metering cap 1.5 kW residential / 75 kW commercial
  • Typical system size 5-10 kW + battery
  • Salt-air zone Coastal areas only
  • Hurricane risk Medium
  • 10kW system cost USD $7,500
  • Shipping CIF Belize City direct

Cayes (Ambergris, Caulker, Tobacco, etc.)

  • BEL grid available No (or unreliable)
  • Net metering N/A (off-grid)
  • Typical system size 10-15 kW + 20-30 kWh battery
  • Salt-air zone Always (marine-grade required)
  • Hurricane risk Higher (exposed)
  • 10kW system cost USD $10,500 (incl. barge)
  • Shipping CIF Belize City + barge to Caye

What matters for solar in Belize

Voltage: 110/220V split-phase (US-style)

Same as Jamaica, Bahamas, US. Standard split-phase inverters work natively. Easy parts replacement.

Hurricane: medium risk

Belize sits at western edge of hurricane belt. Lower risk than Jamaica/Bahamas but still requires reinforced mounting on coastal/Cayes properties.

BEL net metering: 1.5 kW residential cap

Capped grid export. Workarounds via self-consume, off-grid, or commercial registration. PUC may revise the cap upward as policy evolves.

Cayes shipping: barge required

After CIF Belize City, you need water-taxi or barge to reach Cayes. We coordinate scheduling but local transport cost is on the buyer (~$400-800).

Typical Belize solar pricing

Size Location Cost (USD) Notes
5 kW Belize City home (hybrid) $4,800 1.5 kW grid export + self-consume
10 kW Mainland (hybrid) $7,500 Or 75 kW commercial classification
10 kW + 20 kWh Ambergris Caye / off-grid $10,500 Includes marine-grade + barge
50 kW Boutique resort / dive shop $35,000 Commercial classification

Frequently asked questions

Why does BEL cap residential solar at 1.5 kW?
The cap is a holdover from BEL's earliest pilot net metering policy. The cap is for grid-export only — you can install much larger systems for self-consumption or off-grid use. Working around it via battery storage or commercial classification is normal.
Can I get solar on Ambergris Caye if there's no BEL connection?
Yes — Ambergris Caye + most other Cayes are predominantly off-grid markets. We design fully self-sufficient systems with battery backup. CIF shipping to Belize City + barge to your dock at additional cost.
Does Belize have any solar import duty?
Solar PV equipment is largely exempt from import duty in Belize, though specific HS codes vary. Sunchees provides full HS-classified packing lists for Belize City customs broker. GST may apply — verify with your accountant.
How does shipping work for the Cayes?
Sea freight CIF Belize City takes 32-40 days. From there, water-taxi or barge to Ambergris Caye / Caye Caulker / smaller Cayes — local transport ~$400-800 depending on size. We coordinate scheduling.
