For Barbadian homeowners & FIT investors

Barbados is the only Caribbean country with a real Feed-in Tariff — BLPC pays you a fixed rate per kWh on a 20-year contract, regardless of how much you use. Combined with the 2030 100% renewable target, solar isn't just savings here — it's a regulated investment.

Barbados FIT investment calculator (20-year IRR)

BLPC's Renewable Energy Rider buys all your solar generation at a fixed rate for 20 years. This calculator shows IRR, NPV, and total income — so you can compare solar against bonds, rental property, or any other investment.

A 25 kW system delivers 14% IRR over 20 years, which beats every Barbados sovereign bond and most CARICOM commercial property yields. Locked-in by FIT contract, not subject to BLPC tariff changes.

Critical: Barbados runs on 230V single-phase — not US-style split-phase

Most Caribbean countries (Jamaica, Bahamas, PR, Belize) use US-style 110/220V split-phase. Barbados doesn't. If you import a split-phase inverter for Barbados, your inverter will not connect to BLPC properly and most appliances will malfunction. This is the #1 mistake new solar buyers make on the island.

What "230V single-phase" means for your solar order

Barbados follows the British/UK electrical standard: 230V single-phase, 50 Hz. Your inverter, charge controller, and any AC-coupled equipment must be specified for this standard.

Component Wrong (US split-phase) Correct (Barbados)
Inverter output 120/240V split-phase, 60 Hz 230V single-phase, 50 Hz
Common SKU mistake EG4 6500EX (US-only) EG4 18kPV-12LV-EU or DEYE 8K-EU
Battery inverter Tesla Powerwall (US 60Hz) BYD HVM (EU 50Hz)
BLPC interconnection Application denied FIT eligible
Appliance compatibility Burnt out at 230V/50Hz Native UK/EU spec

Sunchees ships factory-configured for Barbados spec. All inverters, batteries, and panels in our Barbados kits are 230V/50Hz native — no field re-flashing.

Barbados 2030 net-zero renewable energy goal

The Barbados National Energy Policy targets 100% renewable electricity by 2030. Today the island is roughly 12% renewable. The gap is being filled mostly with rooftop solar via the FIT program — and rates step down each year as the goal approaches.

2030
100% renewable electricity goal
FIT rate today$0.18/kWh (≤25 kW residential)
FIT rate after 2027 (projected step-down)$0.13/kWh
FIT rate after 2030 (projected)$0.09/kWh or replaced by net metering
Lock-in window for 20-year FITApply before 2027 to lock $0.18 rate for 20 years

What matters for solar in Barbados

Voltage: 230V single-phase, 50Hz (UK standard)

Verified Barbados spec only. No US split-phase inverters. 50Hz frequency must match BLPC. We refuse to ship US-only equipment for Barbados orders.

Hurricane risk: lower than northern Caribbean

Barbados sits at 13°N, south of typical hurricane tracks. Most years see no direct hits. Standard mounting + wind-rated rails sufficient. No need to pay Bahamas-level hurricane premium.

FIT vs Net Billing — pick one

BLPC offers either Renewable Energy Rider (FIT, 20-year) OR Net Billing (offset your bill). Cannot do both. FIT pays better if you have surplus production.

BNSI & FTC compliance

Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) certifies installers; Fair Trading Commission (FTC) approves FIT contracts. Sunchees provides BNSI-compatible documentation.

Typical Barbados solar pricing

Size Strategy Cost (USD) 20-yr income
5 kW Self-consume + Net Billing $5,500 ~$22K savings
10 kW Mixed FIT + self-consume $10,500 ~$54K mixed
25 kW Full FIT investment $27,500 ~$136K (14% IRR)
100 kW Commercial FIT $110,000 ~$430K (12% IRR)

Frequently asked questions

Is the BLPC FIT actually a good investment vs other options?
For 25-50 kW systems, FIT typically delivers 12-14% IRR over 20 years — better than Barbados sovereign bonds (~6%) and most rental property net-yields on the island. The 20-year contract eliminates rate risk.
Why won't a US-spec inverter work in Barbados?
Barbados uses 230V single-phase 50Hz (UK/EU standard). US inverters output 120/240V split-phase 60Hz. They cannot connect to BLPC's grid, fail FIT inspections, and damage 230V appliances. Always specify EU/UK-grade equipment.
Should I choose FIT or Net Billing for my home?
FIT if your roof can fit a system bigger than your consumption (you're producing surplus to sell). Net Billing if your system roughly matches consumption. Sunchees runs both calculations on every quote.
What happens to my FIT after 2030?
Existing FIT contracts are 20-year guarantees — once signed, your rate is locked regardless of policy changes. New applications after 2027 will likely see step-down rates as Barbados approaches 100% renewable.
Does Barbados have an import duty on solar equipment?
Solar PV panels, inverters, batteries, and mounting are zero-rated for Common External Tariff (CET) and VAT-free under Barbados's renewable energy provisions. Sunchees provides full HS-coded packing lists for Bridgetown customs.
